Yoga is overrated until you start practicing yourself.
I have a vivid memory of my first ever Yoga class 8 years ago. It was on a whim that I chose to buy a yoga mat and changed into yoga pants in a fit-on room. I took the class because I was tagging along with a friend who wanted to try out a new fitness ‘thing’. I had no idea what I was signing myself up for when I entered the hall. Having always been in to fitness including running, gymming or cycling I was at a low with fat all over my body following the birth of my second son.
Tadasana
Tadasana or the Mountain Pose was the the first Yoga Asana, the teacher taught. It looked simple from the outside which appeared to be just standing straight but boy wasn’t it tough!. I felt an instant lift to my tired and sagging muscles with this simple single pose. Something about Yoga brought me back to my mat regularly afterwards. When I was rummaging through some old pics to play the ’10 year challenge’ Last year, I found a pic to go hand in hand with the ones from life now.
Heals from inside out
I don’t recognize the person on the left anymore, not only because of the difference in physical appearance but also because of the maturity yoga has brought to my mind through regular practice. Not only Yoga can be done in the confines of your home sans equipment (and sometime even without one a mat even) It can also bring in a profound sense of relaxation to your mind, and a sort of spiritual awakening you never knew was within you.
It has 8 components
To me, Yoga made the most important difference not only through the physical (Asana) practice but also through the rest of the seven limbs of ashtanga yoga. Through yogic precepts and observances (Yama, Niyama) breathing techniques (pranayama) & meditation (Dhyana) I found a new lifestyle. As a mother of two sons, an entrepreneur, an academic and a teacher this beautiful practice has brought me closer to nature in ways I never knew possible.
